Must-Know 2017 Fashion Trends

With a new year comes a new set of trends. The top dogs at the heart of some of the world’s most renowned fashion houses see their creations come to life on the runways of fashion week, and eventually the styles trickle down to the mass market and become putty in the hands of the style-conscious gent. While the core of fashion and trends is ultimately dictated by what makes people like Anna Wintour break a smile from the corner of her pursed lips in the FROW, sometimes, we need to take what we see at fashion week with a grain of salt. It’s always going to be wackier than your average male. The trick is to identify the essence of what’s hot on the runway, and look out for these hues in your favourite stores – and in your price range. Luckily for you gents, we’ve sorted the socks and sandals from the pyjama suits and boy scout overalls (Louis Vuitton, we’re looking at you) and with help from Anton Dee from The Style Division we’ve narrowed it down into 5 key themes to keep your peepers open for in 2017.

Sportswear

We never thought we’d see the day. Sportswear has responded to the fashion CPR and oh boy, it’s back with a vengeance. It’s sort of 90s throwback meets bogan couture – all the more reason to be careful with this one. We hear it’s attributable to a number of ritzy designers partnering with some of the most forgotten sportswear brands. Fila and Kappa both appeared with Gosha Rubchinskiy on the runway, but luckily, there were no popper-legged track pants in sight. Look out for sportswear branded tees and polos paired with slacks and sneakers for a luxe, off-duty look.

Clumpy Shoes

Drawing our eyes southward in 2017 is clumpy footwear - hipsters rejoice! Platform-soled creepers, wacky iterations of classic lace ups and, we kid you not, socks and sandals. Now here’s a classic example of taking the runway with a grain of salt. The key takeaway here is that bold, statement footwear is in – great news for you lovers of the hipster trend. There’s no need to go crazy, but giving your standard style a little shakeup won’t go a miss in 2017.

Oversized Shirts

Get The Truman Show in your Netflix queue, because baggy shirts are back. This is your chance to hit the preppy trend. Think short sleeves and old school prints, like clashing checks and vintage-inspired stripes. Tuck into high-waisted slacks for the ultimate in contemporary prep. Newbie to the preppy party? Slouchy Trousers

Prep your ankles, gents. The ankle grazer slouch pant is your go-to for 2017. A straight-leg, relaxed fit is seemingly the go for guys in search of a smart casual style next season. A wider leg fitting on previous years, this versatile piece will be a welcome addition to the wardrobes of stylish gents. Bring on the hot temperatures we’re ready for you. Need more smart casual ideas? Team your straight leg relaxed pants with some of these looks.

Boy Scout

No need to brush up on your knot skills here, but boy scout style is back in. We’re not saying pack up the ute and head into the wilderness for a night back to basics, but consider dressing as if you were. Military, pocket-laden styles are back, and this functional wardrobe staple is always welcome with us. Sure, the overalls and belted jackets seen at fashion week are the most concise iteration of the trend, but what you need to keep an eye out for is earthy tones like tan and khaki, buckles and combat-style pocketing. Ideal for winter layering or cool autumn transitions.
