Poshmark

Poshmark is the largest social commerce marketplace for fashion where anyone can buy, sell and share their personal style. With over two million Seller Stylists and millions of shoppers, Poshmark brings together a vibrant community everyday to express themselves and share their love of fashion. Resale site Poshmark has paid out more than $2 billion to its community of sellers this year, riding the wave of interest in clothing sustainability and doubling the $1 billion milestone the company hit just a year ago. The company said Poshmark users spend 23 to 27 minutes on the platform, share 30 million listings daily, and have access to more than $175 million worth of inventory uploaded to the platform every week, ranging from luxury fashion to streetwear to home décor. The milestone is another indication of the explosive growth of the secondhand clothing market, which is expected to double in the next five years to reach $51 million.

StockX

StockX, the stock market of things, is an entirely new way of buying and selling sneakers, streetwear, handbags, and watches. Their live marketplace means that you no longer have to scour the entire internet to find the best price on the item you want. They bring it all to you, in one place. StockX also lets you sell your items for a fair market value without having to negotiate with every single potential buyer, one by one. StockX operates in a similar fashion as the world’s major stock markets. Buyers make “bids” for the items they want, meaning they tell the market what they’re willing to pay for a given item. Sellers set “asks” for the sneakers they’re willing to sell on the market, meaning they tell the market what they’re willing to sell the item for. Simply stated, their goal is to be the most efficient, most intelligent and most transparent marketplace for buying and selling.

They recently announced they’re expanding its offerings beyond the resale market, expanding its selection to include brand-new apparel and accessories. These additions to the buying-and-selling platform’s selection will see a variety of items from emerging, contemporary and luxury brands that cross over into the streetwear sector. Furthermore, this shift marks the GOAT’s first departure from its focus on sneakers.

HEWI

Since its launch in 2012, HEWI London (originally known as HARDLY EVER WORN IT) has paved the way for pre-owned fashion. Founded by Sharon Wolter-Ferguson and her two daughters, Natalya and Tatiana, the idea came about while the family were living in Monaco, a world of glamorous parties and prestigious events, where outfits are never repeated. Observing the huge pressure of trying to keep up with Monte Carlo's jet-set elite and their constant new purchases, Wolter-Ferguson was inspired to create a platform for fashion lovers to buy and sell their own luxury items creating a uniquely liberating shopping experience. Headquartered in an elegant Mayfair townhouse in the heart of London, HEWI also offers an exclusive concierge service to VIP sellers, helping them to edit their wardrobes and choose what to sell on. The business has become a global brand, partnering with numerous celebrities from the worlds of fashion, film, music, royalty and entertainment.

Depop

Depop was founded by co-founder of PIG magazine and RETROSUPERFUTURE sunglasses, Simon Beckerman. Originally a social network where PIG’s readers could buy items featured in the magazine. After realising that Depop needed a selling function, Simon re-envisioned the app as a global marketplace — a mobile space where you can see what your friends and the people you’re inspired by are liking, buying, and selling. In turn, your friends and creative influencers all over the world can see the things you like, buy, and sell, and are inspired by you. This ecosystem has supported Depop becoming a global conduit of connection, not only in m-commerce, but culture, design, and creative communities around the world. According to Depop chief executive Maris Raga, the company will also use some of its recent $62m (£50m) fundraising to expand further across America, which already accounts for around 30 per cent of its revenues and user base. Sales on the app surged by 85 per cent in 2018, with the group stating that an “impressive double-digit growth is set to be maintained this year”. Raga also said that as well as fuelling its own success, it is also creating a swarm of young entrepreneurs.

Thrift+

Thrift+ is founded on the belief that charity shoppers deserve the same quality shopping experience as regular shoppers. Their founder, Joe Metcalfe, left his job in 2014 with the mission of bringing charity shops online. In 2015, he built and launched the UK's first Click & Collect app for high street charity shops. Since then, he has been working to create a service that encourages high quality donations by offering convenience and rewarding generosity. The vision is to create the single best destination to shop for secondhand clothes. By bringing online charity shopping up to the same level as Amazon and ASOS, they can make it a truly unstoppable force for good. The recent news of Farfetch partnering with Thrift+ builds on a concept dubbed ‘Farfetch Second Life' that the company introduced back in May, which allows shoppers to donate pre-loved designer bags as a way to earn store credit. The service is currently being tested out as a pilot scheme in the UK and select European countries.
