4 Tips to Help You Quit Smoking

Whether you’re an old-school smoker or have recently picked up the bad habit, there are many reasons why you may want to quit smoking – from wanting to be healthier to getting rid of the awful tobacco smell. However, much you may have tried in the past; quitting smoking isn’t an easy thing to do. This is because cigarettes contain harmful chemicals such as nicotine, which your body becomes addicted to once you begin smoking. In order to make your journey to a non-smoking life much easier, here are four tips that can help boost the chance of a successful life change.

1. Set the date 

Quitting cold-turkey is a hard thing to do for even the lightest smoker and if you’re planning on going down this route, it’s a great idea to set a date on when your last cigarette will be. Planning in advance gives your mind and body the time to prepare for the sudden lack of nicotine. You can continue to smoke on the same schedule as you always have until this date, or cut down in preparation. Whichever method you take, ensure that the date you set is concrete and vision it as the last day that you ever smoke a cigarette.

2. Change your mindset 

When people attempt to quit smoking, failing to change their mindset and attitude towards smoking is what leads them off-track. Once you’ve set the date, start to think about the benefits that will come from quitting and how it is a positive change rather than a chore. You can do this by making a list of the reasons why you want to quit smoking. Seeing this on paper as opposed to in your head can have a powerful effect, and can drive you to become more determined to quit.

3. Look at your lifestyle 

Once the day has arrived and it’s time to quit, it’s not uncommon for the nicotine withdrawals to feel overwhelming. However, remember that your daily lifestyle can have a dramatic impact on these feelings. Factors such as your diet and exercise levels should be looked at if you’re experiencing this. Studies have shown that fizzy drinks, alcohol and tea make cigarettes taste better and can lead to you craving them more, so try and switch to only drinking water to make the change easier.

4. Use a substitute 

If you’re terrified at the thought of quitting smoking cold-turkey, you can consider a healthier smoking option such as vaping. It works by providing the body with nicotine without the bad chemicals such as tar, and you can reduce the nicotine levels as and when your body is ready. Beginners vaping kits are excellent options and in the long-term, work out more cost-effective than tobacco smoking. It also helps to keep the hands occupied; a factor that many people who quit smoking struggle with once they’re without their tobacco cigarette.
