7 Style Mistakes Men Make Daily and How to Fix Them

Year after year, I see men dropping the ball on their style. Life happens, and sometimes style takes the hit… or… maybe it’s just one of those things that’s always been a bit of a struggle for you.

Either way, it’s time to gain control and hammer down on some of the worst style mistakes men make daily so you can always look your absolute best.

1. Wearing ill-fitting clothing

I’ll start off by saying this: it doesn’t matter if you’re wearing a full on suit or a sweatshirt and sweatpants, ALL clothing should fit your body appropriately. You never want your clothes to be so big that you’re drowning in fabric or too small that it looks like they’re cutting off your blood circulation. The key is to know your measurements and compare with new purchases to ensure optimum fit.

2. Wearing wrinkled clothing

It's never a good look to step outside with unsightly wrinkles in your clothes. You’ll immediately signal to the world you’re a man that takes zero pride in his appearance. Get yourself a nice little hand held steamer and do 2-3 glides over your outfit before you jet out the door. If you want to make things even easier, go for a wrinkle remover spray like this little guy from Tom & Sherry, all you need to do is spray and then shake the garment a few times and watch those pesky wrinkles vanish into thin air!

3. Lots of Bold or Patterned Pieces

Lots of guys think that in order to look great they have to wear prints, patterns and colours galore; and quite frankly, it’s a recipe for disaster. If you’re unsure of the level of print, pattern or colour to inject into your outfit, start with one accent piece and keep the rest of your outfit muted.

4. Long shirts

If you’re going to have your shirt untucked for casual events, you've got to do it the right way. I see lots of men wearing those lengthy button downs untucked making their upper body appear longer than it should be. Make sure you're intentional about the length and go for one that lands around mid crotch — this will ensure that your top half is nicely balanced with the lower half of your body.

5. Not dressing according to age

If you’re a man in his mid-40s still dressing like you did at 22, you’ll just look as if you’re trying to be down with the kids. Focus less on what’s hot in the moment and more on timeless pieces like polos, dress shirts, blazers, trousers, dark wash jeans, loafers and boots — that way, you’ll always look in style and age appropriate.

6. Wearing the wrong cologne

When it comes to fragrance, you want to go with one that blends in with the current season. Fuller more brawny notes like sambac, sandalwood and patchouli compliment the colder temperatures, while more light and airy scents like sage, geranium and tonka bean work great with warmer temperatures. And remember to apply with a light hand, the last thing you want is to walk around with a scent-cloud completely devouring you.

7. Letting Other People Dress You

Usually when men are on the fence about their style choices, they’ll go to the most convenient person and ask for feedback. And while this may be a good idea in the moment, it isn’t suitable for long-term success. Having great style is a task that requires excellent creative ability and visualisation skills. If your goal is to stay looking your ultimate best, I highly suggest seeking out a wardrobe consultant who has the skills necessary to create a bespoke style for you.
