In Convesation with Jan Juelicher of Dalgado

Dalgado is a German design studio obsessed with sourcing the finest materials and crafting them into premium-quality accessories without the luxury markup. Premium quality belts and gloves are made to last and offered at honest prices. Ethically and environmentally-friendly handcrafted by revered German and Italian artisans, these products are designed to withstand the test of time.

In a recent episode of the MenswearStyle Podcast we interviewed Jan Juelicher, Co-Founder of Dalgado about the founding story of the DTC brand he started with his brother in 2017 without any prior experience working within the fashion industry. They started with woven belts which proved to be very popular, and then moved onto other categories such as trainers, socks, gloves, and belts. Our host Peter Brooker and Jan also talked about sourcing the best suppliers, minimalist design philosophy, transparent pricing, and sustainability.

“My brother and I started the company in 2017 and it was a passion project for us. We've always been interested in fashion and design, but we had no background in it. We grew up with design because our father is an agent for Italian designer furniture companies. So, we grew up with these beautiful furniture pieces that still look good after 15 years. We just knew that quality and good design is something that sticks around, and this is something we kept in mind. It took us a while to actually start building the business because my brother was travelling quite a bit after high school. He was in Australia and then he studied in the UK and South Africa. I was in the US studying, and starting a company in two different continents just wasn’t feasible. So, we waited until all of that changed. I then moved up to Dusseldorf where we are now located, and we founded Dalgado. The first product we made was high quality belts. This product ties in really nicely with our approach for a chic wardrobe because it pairs nicely with both formalwear and casualwear. The braided suede belts have been our most popular belts ever since we introduced them. Without any background in the fashion industry, we had no context when it came to finding manufacturers. After a Google search found a traditional belt manufacturer in Germany which has been running since 1829. They’re amazing and they have so much know-how with their craftsmanship. It has been absolute bliss working with them.”
