Discover May 2020’s Coolest Stuff

I hope you’re all holding up well and staying safe at home, especially now the true British spring weather has finally arrived. In fact, there’s a gale blowing outside my window as I type this, so I certainly have no plans to leave the house today. As usual I’ve been keeping my ear to the ground and have some great new drops to show you. We have pyjamas made from sustainably grown eucalyptus trees and running shoes powered by renewable natural materials, among others. So, following on from my April roundup, I’ve compiled a list of my favourite products and releases for the month of May 2020 – enjoy.

Briston Clubmaster Watch Collection

Briston is a French brand born out of a very British spirit. From the dreaming spires of Oxford and Cambridge, and from boat races gliding past cricket pitches and polo fields, this sporty chic spirit has been the epitome of British style since Queen Victoria. The Clubmaster collection is defined by its specific cambered square shape. Briston offers different materials to dress this very retro-chic design, joining forces with Italian company Mazzucchelli to make the cases..

Hamilton and Hare Limoncello Sleepwear

British menswear brand Hamilton and Hare has launched a new Pyjama Set and Relax Robe in fresh ‘limoncello’; a ray of sunshine for Spring/Summer 2020. The new sleepwear releases are made from 100% woven lyocell, a luxuriously soft natural fibre made from sustainably grown eucalyptus trees which use 20 times less water than cotton plants. Lyocell is 50% more absorbent than cotton and softer than silk, making it the perfect fabric for a better night’s sleep. Also, zero waste products are generated in the manufacture of the fibre and it is 100% biodegradable so your conscience can rest easy too.

Boardies x Lois O'Hara

This Summer, swimwear brand Boardies have collaborated with Brighton designer, Lois O’Hara, to create two pairs of bright and groovy swim shorts. Her vibrant and diverse creative practice takes in mural painting, design and art direction. There is, however, a consistent thread running through her work. “I’m interested in capturing the fluidity of an image in motion,” says Lois. It’s this sense of fluidity, combined with her love of process and bold colour combinations that makes her work so recognisable.

Allbirds Dasher Performance Shoe

Allbirds, the sustainable footwear and accessories brand from San Francisco, this month launched its first step into the performance category with the Dasher – a revolutionary running shoe made from renewable natural materials. Powered by eucalyptus tree fibre, Merino wool and sugarcane, it is set to challenge the athletic footwear industry, which largely relies on synthetic shoes made from oil-based plastics that linger in landfills and spill into oceans. The Dasher will be the first Allbirds product to display a physical Carbon Count label, which takes into consideration materials, development, manufacturing, and end of life. The shoe emits 9kg of carbon dioxide per pair, nearly 30% lower than the estimated average sneaker.

Universal Works Kyoto Work Jacket

The Kyoto Work Jacket has been inspired by Founder David Keyte’s time spent in Japan, and some of the old work jackets found in the thrift and vintage stores there. Hard-wearing simple tie front garments, which to a western eye looks unusual, yet practical. Universal Works has developed two versions for different fabrics and uses. The full wrap of the Kyoto Work Jacket and the shallower fronted Tie Front Jacket version. Additionally, they have also added a military feel to the jacket by making it in a military spec Ripstop cotton. Made in Japan, it's a great summer fabric - tough and durable, yet lightweight and breathable.
