What it Takes to Become a Personal Fitness Trainer


Have you ever wanted to be a personal fitness trainer? Perhaps you are someone into your fitness and are craving a career change. Well, becoming a personal trainer is an appealing prospect as you get to be in charge of your hours, be your own boss and experience a highly rewarding job. Here are five steps you need to take to become a personal fitness trainer.


Research The Industry 

First things first, you should take the time to research the industry and the process involved in becoming a personal trainer. There is a tonne of courses available at varying prices so you will need to work out which one is the best choice for you. It is a good idea to take your time and get some information before committing to any courses. Some people will have sporting backgrounds or qualifications in courses such as Sports Science, whereas some people have no experience at all, and so you must find a course that is appropriate for your level of experience. Make sure you research how long it takes, how much it costs and how hard it will be to complete a personal trainer course. If you are happy to proceed once knowing all this, you can then start your course knowing exactly what is in store.



Find An Accredited Personal Trainer Course 

As part of your research, you will have probably come across a few courses that are appealing to you. Ideally, you want to find a program that is accredited in your country so that gyms will be happy to hire you. While it is not essential for your program to be accredited, it will give you an advantage in securing work experience. Take the time to research the training courses and requirements necessary for getting into the suitable courses for you. Also, it is worth mentioning that courses will be extremely varied in length, cost and effort required. What’s more, you will also need to consider the type of qualification you need to work in gyms and with people. 


Set A Date For Your Exams

Once you have embarked on your course you should book your exams as soon as reasonably possible. This is because if you fail or need to retake the exam for whatever reason you will not be losing more time than you need to be. Exams can fill up pretty quickly and you should get in there early to avoid having to wait a while after finishing your studies. Be realistic with the date you choose and factor in how much time you have to dedicate to your course. If you are working full time and doing parts of your course on an irregular basis then do not book your course too soon as you are likely going to need a while before you are ready to take it. You need to be prepared and if you are not, then you will just be wasting time and money.



Get Insured 

This point is extremely important to take note of, to safely practice as a personal trainer you need to be insured. Without insurance, you are unlikely to be able to train clients in gyms, and even if you do, this is very risky. The reason being that if your client gets injured, you will be held liable for any costs. So make sure that you protect yourself from liability, injury claims, damage claims, and more by finding yourself a reputable insurance company. 


Gain Work Experience 

One of the biggest obstacles for personal trainers trying to secure their first job is a lack of experience. Gyms and potential clients are looking for individuals who have already proven their abilities and have an impressive portfolio. So one way to get around this problem is to secure some unpaid work experience. Ask trainers if you can spend some time shadowing them and working with them so that you can gain the necessary experience to help you get started. While it is a pain working for nothing, consider it as an investment into your career as this experience will be the foundation for your personal training venture.
